What is the Students for Solar Act? (S6307/A3446)

The Students for Solar Act was originally drafted by our organization three years ago along with former NY State Senator Monica Martinez when school district administrators explained that State regulations prevented them from pursuing renewable energy projects at school facilities.

Currently, New York State education laws require that energy performance contract cost recovery periods not exceed 18 years. It is estimated that the average time for recovery of renewable energy performance contract costs for public school districts is 21 years. The Students for Solar Act would extend the recovery period to 25 years.

This seemingly small regulatory change would have no fiscal burden on the State, but would truly help more schools across New York adopt renewable energy.
