Our History

Students for Climate Action was founded in 2017 as the Suffolk Student Climate Action Committee. Since then, some of our climate achievements include:

  • Motivating our Congresspeople to join the Bipartisan Climate Caucus
  • Assisting the passage of the New York State Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act
  • Urged Congress to support the Carbon Fee and Dividend Act
  • Spoke at six consecutive sessions of the United Nations Youth Assembly
  • Urged local towns to appoint Sustainability Directors
  • Attended New York State Climate Reality Project Retreats
  • Attended Climate Reality Project Trainings
  • Founded chapters in Austin, TX and Pittsfield, MA

After attending monthly board meetings and meeting one on one with Town officials, motivated the Town of Islip to become a Climate Smart Community and add a sustainability director to their staff.

We are working with NYS Senator Monica Martinez to create S5099, a bill meant to assist school districts to include solar in their energy performance contracts.

Through meeting directly with NYS Senate and Assembly members, we helped pass the Climate Leadership and Community Preservation Act.

We have met with countless elected officials, including: NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn, NYS Senator Monica Martinez, US Congresswoman Kathleen Rice and many others to achieve these victories!

Join us to continue the fight for climate action!

If you would like to be a part of the change we continue to fight for, don't hesitate to reach out and join us! Any student is welcome to join one of our existing chapters or to create new ones!
